Meet Dr. Cisu

Dr. Theodore “Theo” Cisu was born in Romania and grew up in Canada and upstate New York. He graduated with high honors from the University of Virginia where he completed triple majors in astronomy, mathematics and biology. There, Dr. Cisu was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and the Raven Society in addition to being a Lawn resident during his final year. After pursuing a graduate research fellowship at Harvard Medical School, he received his MD from the University of Vermont College of Medicine where he was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He moved back to Virginia to complete a high-volume surgical residency in urology at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center and the Central Virginia VA Medical Center in Richmond.

His residency program is well-regarded as one of the busiest in the country with an emphasis on trauma, robotic surgery, and complex oncologic care. During his final year, Dr. Cisu was Chief Resident and received the award for the Highest In-Service Score. Dr. Cisu performed more than 2,000 surgeries during his clinical training including hundreds of operations on the da Vinci robot.
Dr. Cisu, pronounced "see-soo", has made it his mission to enhance and improve the quality of life for every patient. He has garnered a reputation for excellence in vasectomies and urologic surgery techniques and results, with many personal referrals from patients who have experienced his care and warm, genuine kindness.
In his field, Dr. Cisu is particularly interested in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), kidney stones, men’s health, urinary issues, genitourinary malignancies (kidney, bladder, prostate and testicle) and innovative technology like robotic surgery.
Dr. Cisu is well-versed in the no-scalpel no-needle vasectomy and runs a high-volume vasectomy clinic. He has extensive experience in minimally-invasive procedures on the prostate including TURP, UroLift, Rezum, and is currently receiving specialized training to offer the HoLEP procedure. His work has been published in multiple peer-reviewed journals, and he has presented a multitude of abstracts at regional, national and international meetings on urology topics. Dr. Cisu remains active in the American Urological Association, the Mid-Atlantic Section of the AUA, the Endourological Society, the Society of Urologic Robotic Surgeons and the Virginia Urological Society. Dr. Cisu also has significant experience working with veterans and maintains an LGBTQ-friendly practice.

Having lived in multiple countries in his lifetime, Dr. Cisu loves international travel and exploring new places. In his free time, Dr. Cisu also enjoys the outdoors, live music and cooking. He lives in downtown Charlottesville with his wife and their two daughters.

Dr. Cisu is one of the highest-volume vasectomy surgeons in Virginia. While most of his patients are from Charlottesville, Crozet, Waynesboro, Staunton, Harrisonburg and other parts of the Shenandoah Valley, patients travel to see him (and especially his vasectomy clinic) from all across the state including Richmond, Lynchburg, Lexington, Roanoke and even Northern Virginia / Washington DC. He also maintains a very active telemedicine urology practice where patients from anywhere in Virginia have the opportunity to meet with Dr. Cisu securely from the comforts of their own home. Dr. Cisu is a proud graduate of the University of Virginia where he was a big fan of UVA hoops, sandwiches from Little John’s on the Corner, and lived in Room #50 on the Lawn during his fourth year. He and his wife are thrilled to have the opportunity to raise their children in Charlottesville and Central Virginia.
