Dr. Theodore “Theo” Cisu was born in Romania and grew up in Canada and upstate New York. He graduated with high honors from the University of Virginia where he completed triple majors in astronomy, mathematics and biology. There, Dr. Cisu was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and the Raven Society in addition to being a Lawn resident during his final year. After pursuing a graduate research fellowship at Harvard Medical School, he received his MD from the University of Vermont College of Medicine where he was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He moved back to Virginia to complete a high-volume surgical residency in urology at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center and the Central Virginia VA Medical Center in Richmond.

His residency program is well-regarded as one of the busiest in the country with an emphasis on trauma, robotic surgery, and complex oncologic care. During his final year, Dr. Cisu was Chief Resident and received the award for the Highest In-Service Score. Dr. Cisu performed more than 2,000 surgeries and procedures during his clinical training including hundreds of operations on the da Vinci robot.
